Come and join us as we explore composition in photography.

Composition is one of the most critical element in photography. Composition is how a photographer arranges the visual elements within their image, frame. I promise you that if you search for information on composition you will find plenty You will find formal rules, opinion, some of which you can trace back to historical art movements and painters.

Even in the digital world, composition remains the key to creating strong images. Composition is what guides our eye through an image and gives importance to the subject. It creates the story for the viewer and how we as photographers convey that message.

This meetup will explore composition using our frame and tools available to us as the photographer.

This photo is shot on the frozen surface of Prelude Lake. The magnetic storm of the aurora came fast and suddenly. I wanted a self-portrait before I got caught up in the rest of the evening. The moonlight was not sufficient to light my figure, so I used a small, warm light source. My remote did not function in the subzero conditions so I opted for a self-timed shot. I was certain I would lose a finger or two puling the gloves off and fiddling with the camera. Nikon D6100, Rokinon 12mm F2.8

The Wait Was Worth ItI stood there for twenty minutes, camera in hand, halfway up one of San Francisco?s iconic hills, waiting for the trolley. The streets buzzed with their usual chaos?cars inching forward, people crossing intersections in steady streams?but I kept my eyes on the tracks. I had scouted this angle earlier in the day, knowing exactly what I wanted: a classic cable car framed by the towering urban canyon of downtown, with the Bay Bridge standing tall in the distance like a stee

I was out under the night sky, waiting patiently for the blood moon eclipse to unfold. The anticipation was building?but as fate would have it, the clouds decided to crash the show just before the eclipse began.Still, the moment wasn?t wasted. I caught this peaceful scene: a luminous full moon surrounded by drifting clouds, just before the sky fully closed up. Sometimes, you don?t get the shot you planned?but you walk away with something just as special.Shot at 1/500 sec, f/11, ISO 1000,

This October image of a chipmunk was taken on my Lanark County property, I prefer to photograph small wildlife such as this fellow in a natural rustic setting. I always take my images of wildlife big or small early morning or late afternoon?not only are creatures more active but the low angle of light provides better modeling of the subject. When I frame my subjects, I look for angles that provide uncluttered backgrounds, I leave negative space in the framing to allow for text to be added if nee

I recently acquired an older exotic lens, probably circa 1980s. It is a Nikon 400mm f2.8 AI-S which is a completely manual lens with no VR. I paired it with my Nikon D850 to see if I could learn to tackle manual focus. The hummingbirds are congregating on the front of my property where agave plants are flowering at this time of year. This makes it easier for me to practice. This Broad-Billed Hummingbird landed on a stick. The camera settings were 1/3200s at f2.8, auto ISO-320. This lens is old,

This is one of my favourite places in Tassie, the north west coast. Couta Rocks are in the distance, as is a blanket of stars and a full Moon. It is such a beautiful and powerful place up there, a different world, one filled with spectacular scenery and the power of nature, not to mention the cleanest air on Earth.
